GREECE: GENERAL STRIKE FOR 48 HOURS

Manifestation of PAME on April 8 against the tough fiscal measures

The PAME is called a new strike by 48 hours on 21 and 22 April

The Committee PAME against unemployment held demonstrations with the participation of unemployed workers. They carried out sitting in a building of the Ministry Working in Athens and buildings of the state organization for employment in large cities such as Thessaloniki and Volos, and organized a sit-in Larissa requiring protective measures for the unemployed and the policy that supposedly grants to entrepreneurs to create new jobs. The number of registered unemployed in the Organization for Personal Use and Greece (OAED, its acronym in Greek), reached 766,159 in February 2010 (14.6% of the population), an estimated increase of over 20% due to crisis. The real numbers are higher, as many unemployed are not registered, and furthermore, according to official statistics, which works only for one hour weeks is not considered unemployed. The PAME

demands for the unemployed:

* Unemployment insurance equivalent to 80% of the minimum wage (1400?) For any period of unemployment
economic Urgent Help 1000? unemployed for any immediate
* Freezing of mortgages to unemployed
* Medical care and pharmaceuticals without conditions or prerequisites
* No cutting of electricity, telephone and water supply
* Recognition of the period of unemployment as time computable for pension purposes
* mass recruitment of personnel in the field of Health, Welfare and education
Reduced immediate working hours
* Registration and immediate benefits to young people who start working
* Work for all permanent and stable
* This initiative was taken in view of the next manifestation of PAME on April 8 against the new tax measures on durĂsima the working class and popular sectors too poor by the Social Democratic government of PASOK.

The escalation of class struggle is no way back. The PAME calls unions across the country to maintain a 48-hour strike on 21 and 22 April. Workers with experience of recent strikes, must take responsibility and promote the decision to move to strike, and organize a strike from below, in the workplaces. The PAME sector unions called the strike to organize through general meetings, meetings of committees and initiatives to fight. The struggle can bring results if all workers united pactistas ignore the directions of GSEE and ADEDY and combines forces with PAME, appointing their own leaders in the workplaces.
